The Land

Geography & Communities

  • Three mountain chains — the Cordillera Central, Oriental, and Occidental — run through the region.
  • Fertile valleys between the mountains, like the Aburrá Valley, are where big cities were built.
  • Rivers such as the Magdalena and Cauca bring water to farms and towns.
  • Farms on the slopes grow coffee, corn, and potatoes in the cool mountain climate.
Culture

Symbols & Traditions

Music, food, and clothing bring Andean communities together and show what makes the region special.

The Ruana

A warm wool poncho worn to stay cozy in the cool mountain air.

Bambuco

A traditional Andean song and dance, often played with guitar and tiple.

A hearty soup made with chicken, potatoes, and corn — a Bogotá favorite.
